Injury Bug: Chipper hurt during game

The punches keep coming and this time it hit Chipper Jones. Chipper sprained his ankle running out a grounder during the first inning of today's game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The redbirds went on to win the game 3-1. John Smoltz pitched four innings, allowing 1 hit while racking up 4K's. Francoeur and McCann had good days at the plate. Chipper is listed day-2-day. Jones is at a point in his career where he's probably not going to see another full 100% healthy season anymore. He's certainly had a string of bad luck which is starting to look Griffeyesque. That's one reason why Atlanta has bulked up the depth chart with positional players like Aybar, Orr, and Woodward that can take over when Chip goes down.

It's too bad - Chipper is still our best all-around hitter, as displayed by his numbers in somewhat limited play last year, and it's unfortunate that the injury bug has bitten him so badly that I think most Braves fans have come to expect incidents like this. It's simply not much of a shock anymore.

On the bright side, this injury doesn't sound like it's related to his well known foot problems, at least not on the surface. His previous ailments were caused by the muscles on the balls of his feet which prevented him from running or even walking at times. It's possible he was compensating for this when he broke out of the box, but at least this isn't the exact same injury...and it happened early enough in the year that it shouldn't affect his regular season performance.

It's sad to see Chipper going down like this. Glad it's not the same injury that caused the foot problems.
